I stopped into Ray's for a quick slice on the way back from the beach. The parking lot around back has plenty of space for cars. The dining room inside is clean and the tile floor is tastefully done. There are a few paintings that adorn the wall, bringing a classic, Italian atmosphere. They also have an ATM machine and fresh deli meats available.
Their pizza is the classic Jersey shore style: a thin, crisp base with greasy, salty cheese and an excellent, flavorful tomato sauce. The crust on the slice was okay. It was slightly dry, but pleasantly crispy.

Date: 2/14/2021 Location: Lake Como, NJ Pizza ordered: Buffalo Chicken & Grandma Website: www.alternativeplate.com/ For Valentine's Day, the wife and I decided to try a new-to-us vegan restaurant. The menu at Alternative Plate was super appealing and had all of our favorite comfort foods. So many people have recommended the porkroll, egg, and cheese sandwich so I just had to get it. We also decided to try the buffalo chicken pizza, the grandma pizza, and a Gannoli (Alternative Plate's take on everyone's favorite Italian dessert).
Being a big fan of porkroll, egg, and cheese before going vegetarian, I had high expectations for Alternative Plate's version of this breakfast staple. I was very impressed. The sandwich had great flavor and lived up to the hype! I only wish there was more 'porkroll' because I couldn't get enough! The pizza was tremendous. Both pies featured the same crackery-crisp crust which had a subtle, toasted, smoky flavor to it. The grandma pie had a sweet & tangy sauce with a delicious cheese blend. The ricotta flavor really stood out. The buffalo chicken pizza (we went with the tofu version of buffalo chicken rather than the Portobello) was incredible. The buffalo sauce was the perfect amount of spicy and flavorful. The tofu chicken perfectly absorbed the amazing sauce. Finally, the Gannoli tasted great! It was a delicious way to finish off an amazing meal. I'm excited to reheat the leftover pizza and I cannot wait to return and try some more of the expansive menu. Two thumbs up for Alternative Plate! Date: 12/27/2020 Location: Keyport, NJ Pizza ordered: Plain & Sicilian Website: keyportpizza.weebly.com/ Keyport Pizza is located along the main street in downtown Keyport. They have a lovely eating area and the walls feature some lovely pictures. Maybe I came at a bad time, but the pizza left a lot to be desired. I went with a plain slice and a Sicilian slice. Both slices had bland cheese and unremarkable sauce. The plain just didn't have enough sauce to begin with. The crust was okay and the base was pleasantly crispy. The Sicilian had more sauce, but still lacked flavor. It too had a crispy crust and base, but overall wasn't very memorable. Maybe I'll give it another go in the future.
Date: 12/20/2020 Location: Millstone, NJ Pizza ordered: Old fashioned tomato pie slice & plain slice Website: www.trecolorepizza.com Tre Colore' is tucked into a strip mall along Route 33. They have a lovely dine-in area that I would have loved to sit in if this wasn't COVID season. The staff was welcoming, friendly, and quick with service. I went with the old fashioned tomatoes pie slice and the plain.
The old fashioned tomato pie slice was tremendous. The sauce was thick, rich, and full of flavor. Ample oregano was present on top of this slice. The base and crust of the pizza were crunchy and cripsy. The interior of the base was pleasantly fluffy (this is a thicker dough than your standard slice). The old fashioned tomato pie slice was the real winner. The plain slice had a softer base, so I had to fold it to avoid sag. The sauce is good and the cheese had a nice, buttery, salty taste to it. The crust was fluffy and delicious. I really enjoyed the slices from Tre Colore' and would happily stop in again. Date: 6/11/2020 Location: Manalapan, NJ Slices ordered: Brooklyn Square, vodka, & Nonna Website: www.brooklynsquarenj.com/ Disclaimer: These photos are not my own. They were shared on the Brooklyn Square instagram page. I lost the photos from my visit in a data corruption incident. Brooklyn Square has long been on my list of places to try. Pete Genovese ranked it as #1 in New Jersey in 2019 and my good friend and fellow pizza enthusiast Dom has been pushing for me to visit for the longest time. It was by luck that I happened to be near the Manalapan location for work, so counted my lucky stars and stopped in for lunch. I wanted to try everything they had on display, it all looked amazing. I opted for the Brooklyn Square, the vodka sauce, and the Nonna. The Brooklyn Square slice had a soft, thick base with delicious cheese and an incredibly flavorful sauce that was packed full of spices. The vodka slice had the perfect, creamy, cheesy vodka sauce that every pizzeria strives for. It also featured a thin, crispy base that provides a good structure for the slice. The Nonna had a phenomenal, thick, juicy, sweet sauce and was complimented with great cheese and the same crispy base as the vodka slice. I know where I'm stopping if I'm ever back in the area. I'm definitely going to make the pilgrimage to the Jackson location when I get the chance.
Date: 9/01/2019 Location: Neptune, NJ Pizza ordered: Double Extra Large Plain Pie Website: https://peteandeldas.com/ Pete & Elda's is a popular, neighborhood sports bar and pizzeria that serves a quintessential bar pie. This spot is also known for their solo pie challenge where a patron can attempt a double-extra large pie and if the entire pie is finished solo, that person wins a t-shirt. Of course, this is exactly what my friend Charlie and I both decided to do.
The crust is perfectly thin and crispy, like any perfect bar pie. There are good portions of delicious sauce and plenty of salty cheese that ties the whole pie together. I really enjoyed this pizza. My friend Charlie also gave me the secret to finishing the challenge with ease: stack the slices. If you stack them, it's like you only have to finish 4 slices, and since they're so thin, you hardly even notice! I had a blast completing the challenge. The staff was very friendly and inviting and really made the entire experience positive. I noticed on their Instagram that they have a new shirt design and I'm counting the days until I can return for more delicious thin crust. Date: 6/31/2018 Location: Asbury Park, NJ Pizza ordered: Sausage, Margherita, Vegan supreme Website: talulaspizza.com/ My girlfriend and I stopped into Talula's after a day at the Jersey Shore. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the trendy atmosphere. They also have a tremendous classic rock selection playing in the background. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that Talula's has a fantastic vegan selection! I decided to start with the Savile Bourbon mixed drink. It had a nice herbal flavor to it and tasted great! My girlfriend tried the Gin and Jam which started with a zesty lemon taste that was instantly sweetened by the delicious jam. I am definitely trying a Mezcal flight next time we stop in.
For pizza, I decided to try the sausage party and the Margie. My girlfriend went with the Temple V vegan pizza. All three pizzas came out very fast. The sausage party had amazing, fluffy crust that was charred and bubbly. The flavor of the spicy sausage in contrast to the sweet tomato sauce was to die for. The Margie had a delightful red sauce with salty, milky mozzarella cheese and flavorful basil. The Temple V was tremendous. The cashew ricotta stands out and the vegan pepperoni tastes like the real-deal. With all of the delicious toppings and flavors, you don't even notice it's vegan. For dessert, we split chocolate cake and ginger ice cream. The cake reminded me of ginger schnapps. It was very light and not overly sweet or rich. The ice cream added a nice spicy contrast to the cake. Talula's was truly an amazing experience and I cannot wait to return. Date: 12/5/2017 Location: Hazlet, NJ Slices Ordered: Plain, Margherita, Chicken Bacon Ranch Website: http://www.angelapizza.com/ I stopped into Angela's on the way to Atlantic Highlands and I was fairly impressed. First off, the exterior window was beautifully decorated for the holiday season. The inside is on the small side, but there are still a few tables for seating. The atmosphere is casual and friendly and the staff was quick to help.
The chicken bacon ranch was deceivingly good. The slice looked like a pile of ingredients with some dressing, but the flavors melded together nicely with good quality chicken and a good ratio with the dressing. The plain slice was generic with a bit too much seasoning, but the crust and base were both pleasantly crispy. I also tried a Sicilian-styled margherita which was extremely delicious. The thicker base combined with quality cheese and a rich tomato sauce really brought the whole thing together. |
